2017 – 2025
Group history
How MATRIS started at SBA Research in Vienna and moved to Salzburg in 2025.
MATRIS was founded in 2017 at SBA Research, a COMET research centre in Vienna, to connect discrete mathematics, computer science and information security. Under Dimitris E. Simos it grew into a group of around 15 researchers, working mainly on combinatorial security testing and in close collaboration with NIST.
In July 2025 Dimitris E. Simos took up the newly created joint professorship in cybersecurity at the University of Salzburg and FH Salzburg. From August 2025 MATRIS has continued in Salzburg as MATRIS Science Lab, a joint research lab of both institutions. Formally it consists of two units: MATRIS – Complex, Secure and Resilient Systems at the University of Salzburg and MATRIS – Resilience and Security Testing at FH Salzburg. At SBA Research, the former team continues as the DAMAST group.
